Jarno Trulli Q&A

Jarno Trulli ended a long drought when he finished third at Hockenheim, almost four years after his only previous podium finish for Prost in the 1999 European GP at the Nurburgring. For much of the race he ran in a secure second place, but a car problem allowed Michael Schumacher to pounce in a controversial move, while David Coulthard also got through. The German's late puncture then allowed Jarno to reclaim third. Although team-mate Fernando Alonso has justifiably received a lot of attention this year, Trulli has been consistently ahead of the Spanish youngster in recent races, although he's had little to show for it until now. Adam Cooper spoke to the Italian

"Definitely yes. I've had so much bad luck and so many misfortunes. So definitely I deserved this result, and it should have come earlier. I've been searching for it, I've been looking for it, I've been praying, and been always determined to get it, and finally it arrived on one of the most difficult days for me, because I wasn't on top physically. But the fact that I've been trying so much, and been so close, made this result even more satisfying for me."

"Definitely too long. Yes, I made some mistakes, but who doesn't? But I think I really deserved this result because I had so much bad luck, and I've always been performing well in qualifying. The problem with races is that you have to be in good shape for 60 or 70 laps, and sometimes a mechanical problem happens at the wrong moment, and that can spoil your race. This is what happened so many times, and even on Sunday. At one stage I thought, 'Oh God, I'm going to lose it, again.' I gave the most I had, physically, mentally and everything. It's a very good satisfaction for me."

"After a little bit of fever really puts me down, for whatever reason. I remember when Fernando had it in Malaysia, I couldn't understand why he wasn't too bad, because when I have it, I really feel bad. On Saturday I really felt bad, but I didn't really make much publicity about it. I just concentrated on my race and tried to take some medicine. I felt slightly better before the start, but it was a really tough race for me. When I was driving I didn't have big problems, but the biggest problem was when I moved out of the car. I think I had a very low blood pressure, because of the heat, because of tiredness, and everything. I really struggled. When I was driving I was OK, and on the last lap, despite the problems I had, I was still keeping up with the pace, trying to not lose a position. But when I tried to jump out of the car I was really bad."

"On the podium I started to get better. Before it I was screaming to the doctor 'I've been waiting for this moment, and you cannot stop me from going there!' I really wanted to be there. After 10 minutes I was OK."

"Honestly, no. Everything moved on my left-hand side. I was very close to Ralf, but on his right-hand side. So what I was focussing on was basically the apex of the corner, when they had this accident. The only thing I saw was Raikkonen really flying away. I thought maybe Ralf had been hit, but I didn't know until the next corner, when I saw Ralf's car was damaged."

"We'd lost three people, but for me it didn't really change too much. For sure I had three rivals out, so it was good, but honestly talking apart from the two Williams, I think I was looking very competitive all through the weekend, so I didn't really fear Barrichello or even Schumacher. Michael got me, but I was really struggling by then. Suddenly from one lap to another I started losing a second a lap. So I think we had a very strong potential during the race, and I was the only one who was matching Montoya's pace in the beginning of the race."

"I had a mechanical problem which slowed me down, yes, but I can't say what."

"It's difficult to say, because when I started having this problem, I basically started to push even more, and that probably put the tyres under too much pressure. Until then the tyres were working well, and I still had two or three tenths in the pocket, taking care of them during the stage where I was pulling away from Michael, so I knew that I had some more potential to give. So I was just taking care of the tyres. And then suddenly everything happened, and I started losing a second a lap, or even more. It was one of the most difficult moments of the race. The last 10-15 laps were the toughest, and I gave the most out of myself compared to the previous 55 laps."

"I was very disappointed. I was fighting with Michael and he was on the outside and I was on the inside. It was his first attempt at trying to overtake me. At the exit of the corner I tried to stay on the circuit and I slowed down to do that, while Michael just accelerated out and he got an advantage by running on the green painted tarmac. Everyone knew from the beginning of the weekend that we shouldn't run on that tarmac. I gave him the space to rejoin the track, and I thought that he would give me back the position, and he didn't. At that stage I was really, really disappointed."

"Well, at that moment there was no time to talk to the team! I was so concentrating because everything was not very under control. I was just pushing very hard, trying to keep Michael or David behind me. But everyone noticed that Michael's manoeuvre wasn't fair."

"They just called me, and I'd prefer to not talk about what happened in there, but there was no problem for me."

"We go there with a lot of expectations. Since Silverstone we have had an upgraded engine and aerodynamics, and we've been always been more and more competitive. We go there and we just hope that we can deliver a good result again. I'm on really good form in the last few months, I'm really doing well, and just hope that I can finish off this season higher and higher."

"It's difficult to say. Don't forget, there are some high speed circuits where we might not be very, very competitive, but you never know. This year in F1 it's change quite a lot, with the tyres and stuff."

"It's very tight. Montoya looks very good, and at the moment he's got the best car with the best engine and the best tyres, don't forget, while the Ferrari is really suffering with the Bridgestone performance. I think Montoya has got a really big chance, and if he can use it properly, he can win the championship."
