Jag begins rookie shoot-out

Jaguar Racing has begun its young driver evaluation programme in Valencia this morning (Tuesday) as it searches for a partner for Mark Webber in 2004

Formula 3 star Christian Klien was the first up in Spain this morning, and the Red Bull-backed Austrian is determined to make an impression against his fellow young tester this week, American Townsend Bell.

"It will be a match-up between him [Bell] and myself," said Klien. "Either of us wants to be faster and this means a lot of pressure. But I know I am very quick and will try to find a compromise between lapping the track as fast as possible and not spinning off, ruining the car. After all, these racers are expensive."

Bell said: "I'm thrilled to have this opportunity. I've worked hard for chances like this, and I plan to make the most of it. Having tried Bridgestone tyres on the BAR, I'm also looking forward to having a run on the Michelins with Jaguar."

A Jaguar spokesman added: "We don't know how well these guys will go in an F1 car. They should not be viewed as the shortlist we will choose from because this is only the first step in our driver evaluation."
