Jacques Villeneuve Q&A
Jacques Villeneuve and BAR made a breakthrough this season when they secured third place finishes in Spain and Germany. But both came in races of high attrition, and the Canadian is under no illusions. The package is not as competitive as he wants it to be, and after four years without a win on his CV, he's starting to lose patience. If things don't come together next year, then it seems more than likely that he'll look elsewhere for 2003 and beyond - but there's no guarantee that a better seat will be up for grabs. Adam Cooper spoke to the 1997 World Champion
"No, because they were lucky podiums. They weren't podiums because we were genuinely quick, they were podiums because everybody else fell out, and they were probably the two races where we were quickest for us, and that helped. But we haven't been competitive this season, so no, it hasn't been positive."
"Mainly aerodynamics, and also on the engine side."
"Yes, I'm confident. The first engine last year was good right out of the bag, but then improvements didn't really come. They seem to be good with new engines, so it could be good. But it's make or break when you do something new."
"It'll be a new car, but there was a new car this year and a new car the previous year, so... I don't know. It's still the same team, mainly the same people. Hopefully it will be a good car."
"I'm confident that hard work pays off, so that's what we all have to do in the team, and it will pay off."
"It's just that we need to be competitive. Once we're competitive, then maybe we can be unlucky and we don't get podiums, but at least we're competitive, we're there the whole time. But now we're not there, we're in the middle of the pack, or actually in the second half of the pack. Sometimes we just manage to point our nose into it, but that's just not good enough."
"Yeah, definitely. There are more teams with factory engines, and actually with parts of the other cars that go with the engines. That makes it very difficult."
