Imola: European season starts here
The San Marino Grand Prix at Imola this weekend will be a poignant moment for
Formula 1 fans.
As well as being the traditional opening race in the European rounds of the
F1 Championship, the event marks the fifth anniversary of the deaths of
Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger.
Three-times World Champion Senna was killed during the race in 1994 and
Ratzenberger during qualifying..
The race takes place at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Northern Italy,
about 20 miles out of Bologna, on a 3.081mile track.
It's the first of two races in Italy which bring out the tifosi to cheer on the Ferrari's of
Michael Schumacher and Eddie Irvine.
Irvine currently leads the points, and with the crowd behind them, the
Ferrari drivers will be looking for a home win.
Last year at Imola David Coulthard took his only race victory of the season, with Ferrari team mates Michael Schumacher and Eddie Irvine in second and third.
Williams had a good weekend in a generally dismal season - Jacques Villeneuve and Heinz-Harald Frentzen finished fourth and fifth respectively.
We will be covering the event all weekend from practice to the end of the race, so stay tuned to events in Imola with AUTOSPORT Online.
