I can handle Eddie, says Herbert

Following his win at this weekend's European Grand Prix, Johnny Herbert believes he can handle the pressure of being Eddie Irvine's team-mate next year at Jaguar

The 35-year-old, who is remaining with Stewart-Ford next year when it becomes Jaguar, believes his victory will put him in good stead for 2000.

'I believe I can compete with Eddie when we team up next season.

'He's got this thing of being an arrogant son of a gun sometimes, which he is, but that's Eddie.

'We both have three wins each at the moment and I am getting stronger and all I need is a season where I have trouble-free run and I will deliver - believe me, I can do it.

'I have never been overawed by a team-mate and I am sure we can work well together.'

Both drivers have partnered Michael Schumacher during their careers.

Herbert drove alongside Schumacher at Benetton during the latter part of 1994 and 1995.

Irvine's decision to leave Ferrari, with which he is currently running second in the championship, is largely due to his refusal to play second fiddle to the German and have a fair crack at winning races.
