Honda to review qualifying approach

Honda Racing boss Nick Fry believes his team need to conduct a full inquest into their approach to qualifying after Jenson Button's disastrous effort in the British Grand Prix yesterday

Button did not make it past the first knockout qualifying session for his home race, after he failed to make it out of the pits in time at the end of the session to improve on his first effort.

Although some time was lost in the pits while Button underwent a weight check at the FIA garage, Fry thinks that his outfit need to look into whether they could still have got the British driver out again.

"We will have to look at the data and see whether there was or whether there wasn't time," he said. "The engineers thought there wasn't but if there was it would have been very nip and tuck, but we will need to look at it."

Button certainly lost some time being pulled back into the garage rather than simply having new tyres fitted in the pitlane and being sent straight back out again.

And although the initial blame was being directed at the weight check, Fry believes it would be wrong to solely focus on that for causing what happened.

"We seemed to be sitting there for a few seconds, but they have other work to do and I wasn't exactly watching what was going on," explained Fry.

"I am sure they got him on and off as quickly as they could, but it is unfortunate that it should affect the British competitor at the British GP

"There have been discussions about whether there should be weighing during the session for exactly this reason. But it is there for all competitors and it is nothing we can legitimately complain about now."

Despite Button starting 19th, his worst qualifying performance since the 2003 British Grand Prix, Fry thinks that he can still finish in the points.

"There are a few good drivers back there. Jenson, Mark Webber and [Jarno] Trulli, they will all be trying to do the same thing. Jenson has to absolutely go for it.

"We have got to get points and from Jenson's position where he is, that is the objective. We are still fourth in the championship and the aim is to accumulate as many points as possible regardless."
