Hill backs Hamilton to take title

Former world champion Damon Hill is still confident that Lewis Hamilton can clinch the Formula One world championship this year, despite his disastrous Chinese Grand Prix

Hamilton had been on course for the result that would have secured him the crown in Shanghai, but he ran off the track on the entry to the pitlane and got stranded in the gravel.

Hill, who watched the race at a private screening at Silverstone with 100 British fans, said he was still hoping Hamilton would triumph in the end.

"My instant reaction to what happened today was disbelief, but Lewis bounced back instantly by saying that he is still fighting, he's still leading the championship," said Hill.

"His conduct as a sportsman is absolutely amazing. He's come in as a rookie and is out there beating the best drivers in the world. We really hope he wins the championship as we want to put on a fantastic reception for him at next year's British Grand Prix at Silverstone on 6 July.

"In the meantime, Lewis still leads the championship and will go into the next race just as confident as he's been all season. Here at Silverstone we'll be putting on another party to watch the Brazilian Grand Prix in two weeks' time. This Championship is set for a grandstand finish, going right down to the wire."
