Heidfeld wants to fight for title with BMW

Nick Heidfeld is hoping to fight for the title in 2009 with BMW-Sauber following the decision to extend his contract with the team

The German driver, fifth in the drivers' standings, has made a substantial contribution to BMW's progress this year, as the Hinwil-based squad continue moving towards the front of the field.

Heidfeld admits he has been surprised by BMW's quick progress and he is hopeful he and the team will be able to fight for the title in two years' time.

"When BMW took over (Sauber) I thought we would move forward but not as quick as we have," Heidfeld told a news conference ahead of the Turkish Grand Prix.

"I think we will be able to keep improving. The team's goal and my goal is to fight for the championship. I hope we are in a position to do that in two year's time. But as you know, if it is difficult to predict anything in F1."

Heidfeld said other teams had expressed an interest in him but he was happy to stay where he is.

"There were interests from other teams as well, but I am confident in the team, they know what they are doing, things are looking promising in the factory, building a new home for the Hinwil base, everything going in the right direction," he added.

"At the moment it is easy to keep the spirit up. When we will have a low, it will come at one point, then we will have to stick together be strong and get ourselves out of it."
