Heidfeld Still Aims to be World Champion

German driver Nick Heidfeld says he has not given up on his dream of becoming a Formula One World Champion in the future

The 28-year old is enjoying his best Formula One season to date after having struggled with the Prost and Jordan teams in the past. Heidfeld landed the second Williams seat after beating Brazilian Antonio Pizzonia in a shootout during the winter.

The Williams driver has eclipsed the results of his rated teammate Mark Webber, having finished second twice in the last two races, and also having scored his maiden pole position at the European Grand Prix.

"My goal still is to be World Champion in the future and at the moment I am closer to that than ever before," said Heidfeld in Montreal. "Obviously I'm still too far away though.

I don't know where the future will take me in terms of which team I will be in but I am quite confident that I will have a chance to be with a good team and fight for the championship. I never gave up on being World Champion. I have always believed I can achieve it.

"Things can turn around quickly as I have seen from last year to this year, when it was difficult with Jordan and now I am getting podiums. It changes more what people think about me but in terms of my self confidence it didn't change anything.

"I think I already had a good standing in the Formula One paddock and within the team but this season has definitely helped to improve it."

Heidfeld is currently in fourth place in the drivers' standings, seven points ahead of Webber.
