Head: Williams Must Get their Act Together

Williams must get their act together in Malaysia next week if they are to keep up with Formula One champions Ferrari, according to technical director Patrick Head.

Williams must get their act together in Malaysia next week if they are to keep up with Formula One champions Ferrari, according to technical director Patrick Head.

"I'd be very disappointed if we didn't do a lot better in Malaysia than we did in Australia," he said on Friday. "Clearly if we allow a situation to perpetuate where Ferrari are finishing first and second, even if we finish third and fourth, Ferrari will start opening up a big gap in the Constructors' Championship.

"We can't afford for that to happen so we need to get our act together pretty quickly and start scoring points."

Ferrari romped to a one-two finish in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix last weekend with six times World Champion Michael Schumacher leading from pole to chequered flag in a dominant performance.

Williams, who are aiming to wrest the title from the Italian team this year and had high hopes for their new car, saw Ralf Schumacher finish fourth and Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya a disappointing fifth.

Head said the BMW-powered team's performance in Melbourne had not been good enough and they were developing the car as fast as they could.

"We have stated quite clearly that our targets for the year are both championships so we are obviously off track at the moment for those targets," said Head. "It is going to be interesting to see how we get on in Malaysia where I hope it will be dry and a lot hotter."

Head complimented Ferrari and Renault, third with young Spaniard Fernando Alonso, for an outstanding performance in Australia.

"To produce a new engine under the new durability rules and have both cars finish in the points at the first race as well as be the leading Michelin car is to be admired," he said of Renault.
