Haug won't stand in Paffett's way

Mercedes-Benz Motorsport boss Norbert Haug has told his driver Gary Paffett not to be distracted from his DTM touring car title challenge by the recent speculation linking the 23-year-old with the Sauber Formula 1 team

Paffett, a former McLaren Autosport BRDC Award winner, has won four DTM races this year (although he was disqualified from one of those on a technicality) but has recently held talks with Peter Sauber about the possibility of replacing Giancarlo Fisichella in the Swiss team next year.

With the summer F1 testing ban now in operation it has also been suggested that Sauber, which has not yet run a third car on Fridays at grands prix but is entitled to do so, is going to field Paffett in a third car at Hungaroring.

"We've always supported young talent," said Haug. "Gary has done a great job but it's very important for him to keep focused and not let his performance drop. Peter Sauber approached me and he is quite a good judge of young talent.

"He asked me and we certainly can find a solution to get a test drive. But Gary should concentrate on his DTM job first. Maybe there is an opportunity for him in a third car this year in a short while. We are discussing that constructively and will never stand in the way of a racing driver."

However, on the subject of Christijan Albers, who Jordan announced on Saturday that they will test in September, Haug said: "There are a lot of noises that I don't understand. And I know nothing about a test drive at Jordan. But I should know it.

"It would be fantastic if a DTM driver or two could be promoted into F1. We have some talented guys. But what I do not like is when people announce test drives before telling the contractual partner - that's not how it should be."
