Hamilton surprised by Alonso's comments

Lewis Hamilton has admitted he was surprised to hear about Fernando Alonso's suggestions that the Briton is getting more support from McLaren this year

Two-time champion Alonso suggested earlier this week that McLaren were helping Hamilton more because he was a British driver in a British team, something Ron Dennis denied on Tuesday.

Hamilton admitted Alonso's comments took him by surprise, the Briton adding that he did not agree with the Spaniard's views.

"I find it strange he said that, because I feel ever since he joined the team have been extremely motivated to push us both to winning," Hamilton told a news conference ahead of the US Grand Prix.

"Ron (Dennis) and other guys in the team are pushing hard, working hard to make sure we have equal opportunities. It is always going to be difficult.

"I have a great relationship with all the guys in the team, I have been there since I was 13, but when Fernando came they were excited.

"I don't know why he would say that but I guess because he is Spanish and I am English he might feel that way but I don't agree with it personally."

Hamilton has taken Formula One by storm in his maiden season, the rookie leading the championship after clinching his first win last Sunday in Canada.

He reckons Alonso perhaps did not expect him to be so strong right from the start.

"I doubt he was expecting me to do as well as I am, but I don't know if that is why he is saying what he is saying," Hamilton added.

"Coming into the team ... he is a two-time champion, he has not really been challenged. He's had some challenges, but not someone as close as me and as good a friend off the track. So it is a very difficult situation."
