Hamilton insists too early for title talk
Championship leader Lewis Hamilton says he is not yet ready to revise his goals for the season despite scoring his second victory at Indianapolis on Sunday
The McLaren driver continued with his stunning debut season by clinching victory for the second race in a row, completing a dream week in North America following his maiden win in Canada.
Sunday's triumph allowed Hamilton to forge 10 points clear of teammate and two-time champion Fernando Alonso, who had to settle for second place in Indianapolis.
Hamilton's podium was his seventh in as many F1 races.
The rookie insisted, however, that it is still too early to start thinking about the championship.
"I wouldn't say my goals have changed," said Hamilton after the race. "I came into the season with an open mind, just trying to do a good job.
"We are seven races into a championship and I have to be smart and realise we are running at the front and there is a possibility to win the championship but it is far, far too early to think about it or get hopes up.
"We have to remain consistent and keep on winning, but as many points as possible is good for me and the team."
Hamilton admitted he was finding it hard to come to terms with his sensational start to the season.
"Coming into season you have to be realistic, this is the pinnacle of the sport and I never expected anything and I hoped to do well, do a solid job, build upon it on this steep learning curve but I never expected it," he said.
"I hoped maybe I would get a podium at some point. I have been on podium in seven races, it is insane. I find it hard to come to terms with stuff. I am focusing on trying to enjoy it without any of the other stuff, I don't think anyone expected me to do as well as I am doing."
Alonso said he had also been surprised by his rookie teammate's results, but the Spaniard was still adamant the championship will only be decided in the final races.
"It has been a surprise for me and a surprise for everybody to see him (Hamilton) doing so well and leading the championship at this point," said Alonso. "But I have confidence. We only did seven races, 10 to go...the championship will be decided at the end."
