Hakkinen takes pole at Monza

Mika Hakkinen will start tomorrow's Italian Grand Prix from pole position

The Finn dominated qualifying today with a 1.22.432 lap of the circuit, which no other driver was able to match.

It is Hakkinen's 11th pole of the season, and a boost for his championship hopes as his main rival for the title, Eddie Irvine, is down in eighth position.

Irvine is more than a second slower than Hakkinen, and two-tenths behind current team-mate Mika Salo - who starts from sixth on the grid tomorrow.

Hakkinen's team-mate David Coulthard will start from third behind Jordan driver Heinz-Harald Frentzen, who put in a stunning 1.22.926 behind Hakkinen.

But it was Italian Alessandro Zanardi who stole the show. He put in a blistering lap in his Williams to claim fourth on the grid alongside Coulthard.

His team-mate Ralf Schumacher will start fifth, ahead of Mika Salo and Rubens Barrichello.
