Gunther Steiner Q&A
Testing at Monza in July showed that the Jaguar R3 was well suited to Monza, but even team insiders didn't expect to see Eddie Irvine qualify in the top five, ably backed up by Pedro de la Rosa in eighth. It's been a tough year for the team, but after Eddie's sixth place finish at Spa things are looking up. A couple of retirements on Sunday could land the green cars a useful helping of points, with two favourable tracks still to come. Adam Cooper spoke to team MD and acting technical boss Gunther Steiner, who hasn't stopped smiling since the session ended
"It was better than expected. We expected to qualify in the top 10, but fifth is a very good position, and we're happy with it. Everybody's working hard to achieve this, it didn't come on its own, everybody did a good job up to now. Now we have to carry it on tomorrow."
"I would say we had a few little issues. You always have them, and it's nothing exceptional I would say. It was a good weekend up to now, and the result shows it."
"For sure it shows the engine is good. Also here you don't need the maximum downforce, but everybody can take off downforce, so everybody's in the same position. That's easier than putting it on! It shows that if we can develop, we can achieve what we have to do."
"It's the best thing you can have for the whole team. You push everybody to work hard, to achieve this, and then when you get this it's better than a thank you."
"There will be still a lot of talk yet. We haven't made our decision, and we concentrating on sorting the car and getting something out of it, and then we'll see what happens afterwards."
"Nothing is impossible, you know. But as I said before we haven't made our decision, so we don't know."
"He's acting head of engineering. He's working on the new car for next year, and to push that one forward you can never have enough experience and brainpower to make a new car."
"Yes, because his wife is expecting a baby, and he wants to have some time off to help out."
