Grapevine: McLaren in fishing charity challenge
The McLaren factory in Woking is to be the scene of a unique charity event today with its lake hosting a special fishing competition
Team boss Ron Dennis has laid down a challenge to young cancer fundraiser Liam Fairhurst to catch as many fish as he can from the lake at the McLaren Technology Centre.
For every fish Fairhurst hauls out of the water, Dennis will pay £50 towards cancer charity CLIC Sargent.
Liam, who has been fighting cancer himself, was offered the unique money raising opportunity when he met Dennis during a factory visit in July. The 13-year-old has been raising money for CLIC Sargent in memory of his friend, Jack Wilkinson, who died from cancer - and is hoping to add to the £250,000 he has raised already.
Speaking about the event, Dennis said: "Liam has one hour to catch as many fish as he can. But only he is permitted to handle the rod and only I can count up the number of fish before they are returned to the lake. Having said that, I'll let him bring an expert angling coach. In return, I have promised Liam £50 for each fish he catches."
Liam is seeking further sponsorship for the event and more details can be found at www.justgiving.com/mclarenliamfairhurstfishingchallenge
"If people sponsor me just £1 it will help make a difference," he said. "CLIC Sargent has been there for my family throughout my treatment. I want to give something back so that they can help other families like mine."
