Grapevine: Irvine: Young Drivers Should Get Out More

New drivers coming into Formula One need to get out and enjoy themselves a bit more, according to Jaguar's pitlane playboy Eddie Irvine.

New drivers coming into Formula One need to get out and enjoy themselves a bit more, according to Jaguar's pitlane playboy Eddie Irvine.

"I think there is a problem. A lot of the drivers are coming up through go-karting with this Playstation booming on, they just don't live life," the Northern Irishman told BBC radio's regular Formula One show on Thursday. "They do their Formula One and then they go home and they play it on their TV.

"I think we are breeding a bunch of sportsmen that probably don't add a lot to the sport. They might be good drivers, but McEnroe and Borg proved in tennis what you need.

"Who's ever really watched tennis since then? I don't watch it to be honest. I think Formula One needs to be careful," added the Jaguar driver, whose own well-documented party lifestyle and love of being seen with beautiful women on his arm ensures that he will never be bracketed among the stay-at-homes.

"The only thing I am really competitive about is girls and motor racing," confessed the driver. "I always want to have a better looking girlfriend than my mates."
