German GP: Latest news from Hockenheim
Lap 1: Mika Hakkinen leads, Ferrari's Mika Salo moves up to second. Jacques Villenueve (BAR) and Pedro Diniz (Sauber) clash on first corner. Both cars go off and retire out of German GP
Lap 2: Top six: Hakkinen (McLaren), Salo, David Coulthard (McLaren), Heinz-Harald Frentzen (Jordan), Rubens Barrichello (Stewart) and Eddie Irvine (Ferrari). Marc Gene goes off and loses position.
Lap 3: Barrichello takes Frentzen to move up to fourth. The Brazilian closing on Coulthard.
Lap 4: Mika Hakkinen pulling away from Mika Salo. Coulthard right behind Salo.
Lap 5: Coulthard tries to overtake Salo. Ninth-placed Damon Hill (Jordan), goes off track.
Hakkinen nearly two seconds ahead of Salo.
Lap 6: Eddie Irvine dropping back, six seconds behind Hakkinen. Barrichello slows down to cruising speed and pits.
Lap 7: Rubens Barrichello retires with mechanical trouble. Ralf Schumacher inherits sixth position.
Lap 8: Giancarlo Fisichella retires with broken front suspension.
Lap 9: Mika Hakkinen more than four seconds ahead of Salo. Coulthard loses part of his front wing after nudging Salo. The McLaren mechanics prepare to repair damaged car.
Lap 10: Coulthard pits for new nose cone. Re-joins race in 11th place.
Lap 11: Top six: Hakkinen, Salo, Frentzen, Irvine, Schumacher and Wurz. Jarno Trulli's Prost goes off with engine trouble. Hakkinen stretches lead to 5.782s.
Lap 12: Hill goes straight on at Ostkurve. He loses position to Panis and Coulthard. Johnny Herbert ahead of Panis in eighth.
Lap 13: Irvine right up behind Frentzen. Damon Hill pits and retires.
Lap 14: Coulthard (ninth) struggling to overtake Panis.
Lap 15: Zonta in pits. Coulthard outbrakes Panis at the chicane to overtake the Frenchman.
Lap 16: Alesi pits for new tyres.
Lap 17: Tora Takagi retires with a blown engine.
Lap 18: Frentzen closing on Salo. Eddie Irvine still close behind the Jordan. Coulthard swarming all over Johnny Herbert's Stewart.
Lap 19: Olivier Panis pits for new tyres. Johnny Herbert, who started 17th on the grid, takes Alex Wurz to move into sixth. Wurz remains ahead of Coulthard.
Lap 20: Coulthard overtakes Wurz to move up to seventh.
Lap 21: Pedro de la Rosa (Arrows) and Luca Badoer (Minardi) overtake Alex Zanardi (Williams).
Lap 22: Irvine getting nearer to Frentzen. The Jordan pits for tyres and fuel (10.5s).
Lap 23: Ricardo Zonta retires his BAR. Irvine in pits. He exits the pit-lane in front of Frentzen.
Lap 24: Both Johnny Herbert and Mika Hakkinen pit.
Hakkinen's mechanics have problem with fuel rig, delaying the pit-stop.
Mika Salo leads, followed by Irvine.
David Coulthard gets stop-go penalty.
Lap 25: Hakkinen overtakes Frentzen. Hill blames retirement on brake trouble.
Lap 26: Mika Hakkinen crashes into tyre barrier after spinning.
Lap 29: Eddie Irvine takes lead. Frentzen catching Salo. Ralf Schumacher in fourth place, Panis fifth, Coulthard sixth.
Lap 30: Irivne stretches lead to 1.129s.
Lap 31: Irvine 4.6s ahead of third-placed Frentzen.
Lap 32: Top six: Irvine, Salo, Frentzen, Schumacher, Coulthard and Herbert.
Lap 35: Panis takes Wurz on outside of chicane to take seventh. David Coulthard closing on Schumacher.
Lap 36: Frentzen still 4.5s behind Irvine. Schumacher catching Frentzen.
Lap 37: Panis catching Herbert. Pedro de la Rosa crashes out. Driver unharmed.
Lap 38: McLaren mechanics preparing to bring in Coulthard for 'splash and dash' fuel stop. Hebert and Panis move up to fifth and sixth. Wurz challenges Coulthard for seventh.
Lap 40: Johnny Herbert cruising and out of the race. Coulthard moves up to fifth after overtaking Panis.
Lap 41: Irvine maintains lead over Salo and Frentzen. Irvine's lead reduced to one second.
Lap 42: David Coulthard sets fastest lap (1.45.827) of the race.
Lap 43: Coulthard goes quickest again, by recording a 1.45.270.
Lap 44: Top six: Irvine, Salo, Frentzen, Schumacher, Coulthard and Panis.
Lap 45: Irvine wins German GP.
