Gerhard Berger Q&A

When Ralf Schumacher won the Malaysia GP it appeared that Williams-BMW might launch a serious championship challenge this year. The subsequent arrival of the Ferrari F2002 made defeat of McLaren for second place a more realistic target, but suddenly even that looks like being a difficult job. Although Williams is still much faster than its Michelin rival, in Canada everything that could go wrong did, and no points were won on a day that McLaren picked up another nine. Races that fell the team's way last year have not done so this. What's going wrong? Adam Cooper spoke to Gerhard Berger in Montreal

"Obviously it's not a big weekend this year! Of course it's frustrating. First it was a terrible day today. We lost two engines, we had a bad pit stop, we were stuck in traffic with Ralf. It didn't work out well, but that's racing."

"No, I don't agree. I think Montoya had a good chance to win, because thanks to the safety car situation, because he was on a two-stop, we could just use it in the right way. I think he was very strong in the end. He caught up Michael, and he was at least half a second quicker at that time."

"It's another story, but we know that Juan goes for it, and I think there was a chance. I don't want to say it was clear."

"This list doesn't work out so well this year!"

"Somehow on the quick circuits we are not so dominant, and maybe the others just caught up."

"Exactly. We are still in second position and we have to fight for it."

"That hurts. But it's going to come the other way around."

"It's difficult to judge before you do anything there. But you know we have to stop saying this circuit fits us and the other doesn't. We have to do like Ferrari - every one fits."
