Toyota driver Olivier Panis topped the times in Friday practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix with a late run to steal the top spot from Renault's Jarno Trulli.

Frenchman Panis, who scored his best result for Toyota with fifth place at the last race, in Germany, finished with a time of 1:21.770 to lead Trulli by an impressive 0.694 seconds.

Championship challenger Juan Pablo Montoya, who won the last race and has closed to within six points of Schumacher at the head of the Championship, finished third a further tenth of a second back.

Rubens Barrichello finished fourth for Ferrari with Cristiano da Matta fifth in the second Toyota, 0.930 seconds behind his teammate, and Australian Mark Webber sixth in the Jaguar.

Ralf Schumacher, in the second Williams-BMW, finished seventh with Scot David Coulthard, now confirmed at McLaren for another year, eighth just ahead of World Champion Michael Schumacher and Spaniard Fernando Alonso, of Renault.

Coulthard spun his McLaren early in the session and Schumacher spun at turn nine with 15 minutes left to run but there was little other incident in the one-hour session ahead of the afternoon qualifying.
