Free practice 4: Montoya fastest

Juan Pablo Montoya ended up quickest for the first time in an official Formula 1 session this year, as the teams gear up for what looks set to be an extremely close Malaysian Grand Prix qualifying hour later today

The Colombian hit the top with 27 minutes of the session left, pushing team-mate Ralf Schumacher down the time sheets. The German had beaten Rubens Barrichello's pace-setting time from the previous session in the opening minutes of the final free practice before qualifying.

Williams were denied a one-two by McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen, who did enough to go second with 16 minutes left. He missed out on the fastest time by just 0.09s, while Schumacher Jr was only a further 0.04s down.

Moments after Raikkonen had set his time, his team-mate David Coulthard made a mistake and spun into the gravel. He ran wide on to the grass coming out of a quick left-hander and was pitched into a spin from which he could not recover. "I ran out of talent and I ran out of road," he joked.

Coulthard remained fifth behind Barrichello, who also suffered a quick spin. But they were both ahead of Michael Schumacher. The world champion went out for a final run at the end of the session but hit traffic and failed to improve.

Jenson Button was an encouraging seventh for Renault, while fellow Brits Eddie Irvine and Allan McNish were 17th and 18th respectively.
