Former McLaren director Brown has died
Former McLaren shareholder and director Creighton Brown has passed away after battling with cancer
Brown, who made a name for himself in the British motor racing industry in the 1970s, was joint owner of McLaren International with Ron Dennis, when the latter took over the McLaren team in 1980.
He was instrumental in establishing in 1989 the McLaren Cars company, which created the McLaren F1 road car. He left the company in 1992.
Brown died on Sunday, his family at his bedside.
"Creighton passed away this afternoon, and although it is the toughest thing in the world to say goodbye, we would not have wanted him to battle on any longer," the family said in a statement.
"Creighton always lived life to full capacity - any alternative to this was simply not an option.
"Thank you all so very much for your messages of love, support and delightful tales of what Creighton means to each of you. They have been truly heart-warming and we are overwhelmed by the sheer volume of communications from far and wide.
"We have done our level best over the last few days to convey your kind words and sentiments to Creighton and they have all been greeted with a wonderful 'Creighton' smile.
"Wherever you may be, please raise a glass to Creighton."
