Fisichella wants all-Renault front row
Renault should go all out to try and secure the front row of the grid for the Brazilian Grand Prix to avoid any chance of getting caught up in an incident that wrecks their title bid
That is the view of Giancarlo Fisichella, who thinks that the lessons of the MotoGP collision between title contender Nicky Hayden and team ate Dani Pedrosa at Estoril last weekend should be heeded.
Although he is convinced that neither Renault nor Ferrari will deliberately adopt dirty tactics to try and knock each other's cars out of the race, Fisichella is well aware that nothing is guaranteed.
And he thinks the only way for Renault to avoid trouble is to control the race from the front.
"I don't think we are going to see any dirty tactics, because it would be very unfair to see (Felipe) Massa pushing out (Fernando) Alonso," he said. "But anything could happen. It is really important to be on the front row both of us, make a good start and then get to the end of the race."
Fisichella said that he was amazed by the collision between Hayden and Pedrosa, but is well aware of how easy it is to get caught up in situations like that.
"You are in the race, you are really concentrated and want to win, and what happened was a bit strange. But it is not easy in situations like that. Dani had less than one second to think about it, and when you realise that it is too late.
"In Turkey this year I had something similar. I had to brake a lot at the first corner and spun to avoid a collision with Fernando."
Fisichella is approaching this weekend with the sole intention of taking victory - a move that would secure Renault the constructors' championship and Alonso the drivers' crown.
"It is a very important weekend. It is the last race of the championship and there are two championships still open, but there is a good atmosphere in the team.
"We are a little bit more relaxed than the other team because we have got more points than everyone else and we need to score a few points to win both championships. But I don't want to do just this.
"I am really focused to win this race. It is really important for myself to win and score more points than Massa and finish third in the championship."
