Fisichella upbeat despite Bahrain problems

Giancarlo Fisichella is still upbeat about his chances of winning the Malaysian Grand Prix despite his troubled start to the season in Bahrain

The Renault driver was hindered by engine problems in qualifying at the Sakhir circuit, and he then struggled in the race before retiring. In contrast, his teammate Fernando Alonso enjoyed a flawless race and went on to win.

But Fisichella, who last year started the season winning in Australia only to endure a dismal season, is still confident he can fight at the top this weekend in Sepang.

"This time last year I was leading the championship and was very happy and confident - as I am now," said Fisichella.

"I'm not happy about the [Bahrain] race, but I'm confident for Sunday and for the season. Usually Renault do well here and Michelins work well on high temperature tracks."

The Roman also admitted this year is his best chance yet to win the drivers' title.

"Yes, I think so, I hope so," Fisichella added. "I've got a great team behind me, physically and mentally I'm very happy. I try my best.

"It's my second year with the team so I feel more comfortable, and I have a better car than last year. Even on Sunday given the problem I had all the mechanics and engineers were very impressed at the consistency I had during the race."
