Fisichella realistic on Sepang chances
Italian Giancarlo Fisichella believes a podium finish at the Malaysian Grand Prix is not a realistic target for his Renault team
"Realistically, the podium is difficult - it's quite far away," Fisichella told reporters at Sepang.
"Maybe we can fight with BMW, but McLaren and Ferrari are really, really strong at the moment. Unless they lost something with the new regulations on the floor. We tested already and it was okay for us."
Fisichella, last year's winner in Malaysia, finished the season opener in Australia in fifth place, over a minute behind race winner Kimi Raikkonen.
The Roman driver says Renault's main problem is the lack of grip following their switch from Michelin to Bridgestone tyres.
"The level of grip is not enough," he added. "It's the grip especially and the car is unstable under braking, understeering in the middle of the corner and snap at the exit. It particularly lacks grip.
"We are pushing to improve that and we have some new bits here, but it's a small step. We need time but the time is really pushing to close that gap."
Despite their lack of pace, Fisichella says the team remain positive about making a step forward to close the gap to their main rivals.
"The atmosphere is still good. We know we're not quick enough at the moment but we got the potential to make a step forward during the season and to fight to the end to score the best result. All the mechanics are still okay and the atmosphere is good and the motivations is strong.
"Obviously, last year was different: we had the best and most reliable car - and the season was easier. We didn't have a car to react to the Bridgestone tyres which is our problem."
