Ferrari proud of 2 wins with same engine
Ferrari engine director Paolo Martinelli has praised his team's development work on the V8 engine, after the Italians became the first this season to win two consecutive Grands Prix with the same engine
While Renault won the first three races of the season, each win was taken with a new and different engine unit. Fernando Alonso won in Bahrain, Giancarlo Fisichella in Malaysia, and Alonso again in Australia.
Michael Schumacher, on the other hand, won the last two Grands Prix, in Imola and the Nurburgring, with the same engine unit, and Martinelli said he takes great satisfaction in this achievement.
"Since the 2.4-litre eight-cylinder engines have replaced the three-litre V10s, nobody had yet managed to win two consecutive Grands Prix with the same identical engine. Nobody," Martinelli told Italy's Gazzetta dello Sport.
"That's why in Imola we were only half satisfied, while now [after the European GP win] we can say we've completed our mission. I hope this double success is only the start of a trend."
Ferrari struggled with reliability issues on their V8 engines in the first two rounds of the season, suffering from cracked pistons. However, Martinelli says these problems are behind them, and their main goal now is to maximize the engine power.
"The most important thing now is to carefully verify the engines, to understand how to best utilize them at Barcelona," the Italian said.
"It's clear, though, that since we've solved the reliability problems, we've managed to extract the best from our eight cylinders and, together with the great aerodynamic and chassis developments, we've been able to have a winning package at our disposal.
"But I'm not deluding myself, we're not back to 2004. This is another season where we'll have to fight hard."
