Felipe Massa Q&A
Felipe Massa has returned to Sauber this year after a sabbatical as Ferrari's second test driver, and he now has a chance to show what he has learned. His first weekend back in Melbourne was marked by a series of off-track excursions. None involved any damage to the car - although he was mighty lucky to avoid the wall in a high speed spin during the race. Massa's long-term future remains unclear. He still has a foot in the door at Ferrari, and he is highly-rated by Jean Todt - whose son is Felipe's best mate and day-to-day manager. However, others in the camp are not so sure of his ultimate potential, and with Rubens Barrichello committed to the team long term it's hard to see a second Brazilian fitting in with the sponsors' wishes should Michael Schumacher retire any time soon. A good showing at Sepang this weekend, where he scored his first points in 2002, won't do him any harm. Adam Cooper spoke to the youngster.
"Yes, for sure, I'm happy to be back. I'm really looking forward to my second year in F1, and it's the most important year of my life. I hope to do my best this year."
"I think I look at it in a different way. I'm still young, and it was a very important year for me at Ferrari. I learned quite a lot. For sure I missed the races, but on the other hand I did a lot of mileage in a very good car and a very good team, and I think it was very good for me. Now I'm sure that the experience I made last year is very important for my future."
"I think I'm just much more experienced. I understand a lot more how an F1 car is, and I talk with the engineers much more. I think I am a bit more calm driving the car, and I know much more about saving the tyres and saving fuel and everything. I think every year in F1 you improve a lot. It's a kind of university for sure."
"I think I did a very good start. The car was very good in the first stint. But in the second and the third stint my car was very understeery, and I was not happy with the set-up. It was very difficult to drive, especially in the high speed corners there was a lot of understeer. I just tried to finish the race. It was very difficult to drive, but in the end 10 laps before the end of the race I had a problem with the engine. I wanted to finish the race, but maybe next time."
"Yeah. I had quite a lot of understeer and I just touched the kerbs a bit, and I just spun. Fortunately I didn't touch the wall. It was not an easy time!"
"I could have also been very quick, but it was very difficult in terms of my set-up. At the end of the run, especially the end of the second run, my car was very good. But it was exactly at the moment that Rubens and Michael were lapping me. I had to give way to them, and I lost four laps in this case. But at the end of stint the car was very good."
"Yeah, for sure it's like our home race. I hope we can find a good set-up, and that's it. It's important to finish."
"The last couple of years Michelin has been very strong, but for sure I think they are not going to be too bad this year as well. I also think we made a step forward with Bridgestone, and I think we can be quite competitive."
