Da Matta Fastest at Barcelona - Day One

Brazilian Cristiano da Matta set the fastest time of the first day of testing at Barcelona, Spain, where his team Toyota began testing alongside BAR and Williams.

Under sunny sky and with a dry track all day, the CART champion set a time of 1:17.182 - some two seconds slower than the track record, set last month by World Champion Michael Schumacher. Da Matta was also almost a second faster than BAR's Jacques Villeneuve, who set the second fastest time of the day, at 1:18.043, closely followed by teammate Jenson Button.

"It is my third test at the Barcelona circuit with the team, but actually my first here at the wheel of the TF103," da Matta commented at the end of the day, which saw him concentrate on mechanical and aerodynamic set-up work.

"After this first day, I can already say that I am happy with the way the car behaves on this track. I feel it well balanced, even more than on the Valencia circuit in the last days. We managed quite many laps and almost went through our task list for today, despite a few breaks. It is a good opening to our four-day test here since we have an extensive technical programme to cover."

Da Matta continues testing tomorrow at the Catalunya track, where Ferrari, Sauber, Renault and Jaguar are also set to join in for this week's testing.
