Cristiano da Matta Q&A

While much of the focus after the Australian GP was on the poor performance of McLaren, there was no hiding the fact that Toyota did an even worse job exactly two years after Mika Salo gave the team a point on its F1 debut. Obviously that result came in a race of high attrition, but nevertheless 12th and 13th for Cristiano da Matta and Olivier Panis is not going to go down well in Tokyo, not least because both men were lapped twice by the race winner and beat only Giorgio Pantano's ailing Jordan. The pressure is on new technical director Mike Gascoyne to turn things around, but both drivers insist that he is the man to do the job, and are fully behind him. Adam Cooper spoke to da Matta after the race.

"I think when we came here we were hoping to finish the race, but performance wise we never thought that we would be as far behind as we showed up today. We knew we would have a lot of work to do, but we actually have more than we thought."

"We know where we are lacking. One thing that surprises me a lot is that we've already made a lot of progress with this year's car, aerodynamic-wise and everything else, from when we first came out in January to now. We improved a lot, but there's still a lot to do. We'll keep pushing. The difference between now and last year is that we have a good guy guiding us. I think Mike is doing a good job, we just have to give him a little bit more time."

"Not only on the race weekend, but throughout the off season. I think he's already made a difference with the development of the car back in Cologne."

"We were counting a little bit on that. We thought it was something that we had under control. We knew that many of the other guys had it under control too, but we didn't expect that many cars to finish races."

"No, I don't think so. I don't think that the problem is power related. It's a little bit more."

"It was normal. The start was not bad, and I passed one car. I passed Kimi because he had some problem at the start, I don't know what. But in the middle of he first lap he was able to pass me back again."

"Yes, I was on my own a lot. I had a little bit of a fight with Massa and Heidfeld, but that was it. It was quite quiet for me, just pushing, pushing, pushing and not going very fast."

"Ricardo [Zonta] and Ryan Briscoe are running. I think we'll have a few little pieces, nothing really big, but we'll have a couple of small things for Malaysia. Also Malaysia could be a track that suits our car a little bit better than here. At least we hope, because otherwise we'll have a similar performance to here."

"There are more quick corners, and it's more flowing than this track, so it should be a little bit better."
