Coulthard Sets Sights on BAR Seat for 2005

David Coulthard said on Thursday that he would be seriously interested in a switch to BAR-Honda next season if Jenson Button's move to Williams-BMW goes through.

David Coulthard said on Thursday that he would be seriously interested in a switch to BAR-Honda next season if Jenson Button's move to Williams-BMW goes through.

Speaking at the Hungarian Grand Prix, McLaren driver Coulthard said that the prospect of driving for BAR would be something he would relish as he continues to search for a drive for 2005.

Button has announced he will drive for Williams-BMW next year despite BAR claiming he has a firm contract with them, leaving Coulthard unsure of the availability of a seat with the Brackley-based team.

But Coulthard, who has also been linked with a drive for Jaguar - who will lose Mark Webber to Williams-BMW for 2005 - would be keen to joined the fast-improving BAR outfit.

"Yes absolutely," Coulthard said when asked if he would join BAR. "I think they've done a fantastic job and under David Richards' leadership, there's absolutely no reason why they can't continue to build on that."

Scot Coulthard was holidaying in Sardinia with Button when the bombshell dropped that the Englishman plans to switch to Williams-BMW next season. But regardless of whether Button's move to Williams goes ahead, Coulthard, who will leave McLaren after his ninth successive season this year, warns relationships in Formula One are not meant to last.

"I guess logically you would say that damage would be done in the relationship (between Button and BAR)," Coulthard said. "But at the end of the day these aren't marriages that you're entering into, until death us do part, they are all just marriages of convenience. So you are all in love until the day someone decides to move on. C'est la vie."
