Coulthard praises safety standards

David Coulthard praised F1 safety standards, saying Luciano Burti's accident would have been fatal a few years ago

It was the Brazilian's second collision in just over a month after he was launched off the back of Michael Schumacher's car in Germany and skidded off the track upside down but emerged unscathed.

Eddie Irvine, whose clash with Burti caused Sunday's accident in Belgium, has already praised safety standards saying the head and neck restraint the Brazilian was wearing saved him from serious injury.

"I think it is fair to say that Grand Prix racing should be happy with the safety standards," said Coulthard, who is a leading member of the driver's safety organisation, the GPDA, and finished second in Spa. "We have suggested changes were made and they have been, and we are continuing to make further suggestions.

"As long as we can have these accidents in Formula 1 and the drivers walk away, it shows that we are doing a good job. In previous years Luciano Burti's accident would have been a fatal accident."
