Coulthard admits Ferrari look ominous

David Coulthard admitted after the Australian Grand Prix that Ferrari's form looks dauntingly good. But the Scot does not believe the Albert Park race gave a clear indication of where the other teams are compared to the world champions

Michael Schumacher comfortably won the race in last year's F2001, leaving Formula 1 commentators wondering just how much of an advantage the team will have when they debut this year's car. But Coulthard argues that the competitiveness of teams could vary from race to race because of tyres. Ferrari is on Bridgestones, while their main rivals McLaren and Williams are on Michelins.

"You can't, as we know from past history, say that it's all decided after the first race," said Coulthard. "There's a lot that's going to happen this year. There are going to be situations when the Michelin tyres just outclass the Bridgestones, and the Ferrari could find itself down in fifth place. That's a fact.

"There's a long way to go, but I can't deny that it's not good, them being so strong here in qualifying, in wet conditions, and obviously in the race. I think Michael was running at a canter."
