Button 'in a Good Position' for Next Year

Jenson Button has refuted claims that Sir Frank Williams could deny him a race drive next year by making him a test driver at Williams rather than allow him to sign a new race deal with Renault.

Jenson Button has refuted claims that Sir Frank Williams could deny him a race drive next year by making him a test driver at Williams rather than allow him to sign a new race deal with Renault.

Button has impressed for Renault this year and is widely-expected to sign a multi-million deal to retain his race seat with the French team. Team boss Williams has first option on the 22-year-old but Button has hinted that he would only return to the Grove-based team if he was given a full-time drive.

With Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher firmly established as Williams' first-choice pair, it has been suggested Button could be made a test driver in a bid to keep him as a long-term replacement for either driver.

"He can't do that," Button said. "Let's just say he (Frank) doesn't hold all the cards. Obviously we will come to an agreement, over whatever happens. I have obviously got a good relationship with Williams but I am with Renault at the moment, so it is a difficult one.

"Some of it is in my hands. I am not in a horrendously bad situation. The way things have been going this year it is looking positive as well."

Renault chairman Patrick Faure has already stated his desire to "set the wheels in motion" in order to try to keep Button but the Briton insists his future will not be resolved until later in the year.

"There is no use thinking about it until later in the season, nobody is going to make any decisions, but I am in a good position for next year and I am happy," Button said. "But no decisions have been made on what is happening next year and I think we have just got to wait and see."
