Button: Great, until I saw Ralf's time...

Jenson Button professed to mixed emotions as he qualified 10th for the French Grand Prix, ending his recent run of lacklustre performances

The 20-year-old earned praise from both technical director Patrick Head and BMW boss Gerhard Berger. But the Brit, who saw his chances of being re-signed by Williams for 2001 take an upturn this week, had his enthusiasm tempered by the blistering lap that put teammate Ralf Schumacher five places above him.

"I'm very happy after the poor qualifying sessions I've had recently," he said. "When I got back to the pits and I was 10th I thought it was great - until I saw Ralf had gone much faster than me. I was a little disappointed, but I'm happy for him all the same."

Button is making his first appearance at the circuit he has never visited before.

"For his first time here 10th in this company and in this car is a very good job," said Head.

"Jenson's grid position if one from which he can finish in the points," added Berger.
