Bridgestone ups the ante
Bridgestone is introducing new specification dry tyres at this weekend's Brazilian Grand Prix. The decision comes in the wake of the company's trounching at the hands of Michelin last time out at Malaysia
The new rubber, which was tested extensively last week at Barcelona, is designed to cope better with the rigours of the heat in Sao Paulo. This year, and last, Michelin's tyres have had a performance advantage in warmer conditions and with temperatures of around 25 degrees Celsius expected this weekend, the Japanese firm has had to react.
"While we were pleased that two of our teams (Ferrari and Sauber) collected points in Malaysia, the result was not as good as we hoped or expected," admitted Hiroshi Yasukawa, Bridgstone's director of motorsport. "We go to Brazil determined to do better. Last year, drivers on Bridgestone tyres took over the podium and a repeat of that has to be our aim this weekend."
The weather in Sao Paulo at this time of the year is notoriously unpredictable. Rain is expected later this week and it would be no surprise if the race was affected by rain as it was last year.
As well as Ferrari and Sauber, Bridgestone also supplies tyres to Jordan, BAR and Arrows.
