Briatore: Trulli can show true potential
Flavio Briatore, the man entrusted with masterminding Renault Sport's return to Formula 1 as both a chassis and engine constructor next year, says newly-signed Jarno Trulli can show his true colours with the French marque
The Benetton team, which will become Renault Sport at the turn of the year, has taken up its option on Italy's Trulli for 2002. The 27-year-old is effectively swapping places with current Benetton man Giancarlo Fisichella, who is joining Jordan on a three-year deal.
"Jarno hasn't been able to show his true potential until now but I believe that our ambitious programme for the future will give a great boost to his career," said Briatore. "We all know how motivated and competitive he is and I am sure he will be a major asset for the team."
Trulli, who has driven for Jordan for the past two years, says he is delighted with the move.
"I feel very happy and honoured that a big team with a winning history, and an innovative technical programme, has chosen to invest in me," he said. "With Renault, I know I will be rapidly able to compete amongst the best and I sincerely hope to contribute to their ultimate success."
Briatore also took the opportunity to pay tribute to Fisichella, who drove for Benetton for four seasons.
"I would like to thank him for the excellent job Giancarlo has done during the four years he spent with the team," he said. "He is a fast driver and a good team player and I wish him all the best for the future."
