Bourdais admits he needs better results
Sebastien Bourdais fears there is no easy way out of the problems he is facing with his Scuderia Toro Rosso car - as he admits he needs better results to guarantee his Formula One future
The Frenchman has struggled to get comfortable with the characteristics of the STR3 since an aerodynamic update package was introduced at the French Grand Prix.
And with team bosses Gerhard Berger and Franz Tost keen for Bourdais to prove his worth as an F1 driver as they mull over their driver options for 2009, the Frenchman concedes that he does not expect a miracle cure to help him get more out of his car.
"There is not going to be a revolution," Bourdais told autosport.com. "It is not worth expecting it, it is not worth waiting for it - or even looking for it.
"We've run the set-up enough now to know where the limits are, so unless an aero bit arrives that changes the aero configuration of the car it is going to be the way it is going to be.
"There are going to be some races where it is going to be better than others, depending on the track configuration and grip and things like that. And we will go from there."
Bourdais claims the aero update introduced handling characteristics to the car that do not suit his style - and efforts put in up to now to overcome the issues have not yet helped much.
"The car has massive instability in the slow corners and it has got some understeer in high speed, and that is pretty much two things I don't like about cars. The problem is that we cannot really find a fix with the setup. It is just the way the car is, and I am struggling."
Bourdais said that, although there was a clear explanation for why he was unable to match teammate Sebastian Vettel up to now, he still needed to do more if he was to boost his chances of staying in F1.
"In F1 people don't care about reasons or explanations, they look at results and teammate comparisons. So for sure, I need to be delivering better results - there is no question about it. But, (I am) not putting extra pressure on myself.
"If people want to understand they will understand, if they don't want to understand then there is nothing I can do about it. I will keep on doing my job and not think too much."
When asked what Berger and Tost had said to him about his future, Bourdais said: "For the moment, nothing. But I think they were quite happy with what I did at the beginning, and for sure now it would be good to have a couple of good weekends to secure a seat for next year."
