BMW hope for quick deal on new rules

The sport's governing body is currently involved in discussions with the car makers about moves for more environmentally friendly regulations in the next few years.

And although those discussions are ongoing, Theissen has said he hopes the talks do not drag on too long - because it will be cheaper for those involved to prepare for the new rules if they are given as much warning as possible

"There was quite a lot going on behind the scenes of the Monaco Grand Prix," Theissen told his team's website. "Discussions about the future Formula One regulations continued.

"The dialogue started two weeks ago at the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona. As a basis for discussion the FIA had introduced a consultation paper. On that basis, the manufacturers are invited to bring in their opinions and propositions. This will happen in the coming weeks.

"From a technological point of view the topics discussed are very interesting. We are talking about a completely new concept, which will also be relevant for series production. That's why BMW basically supports this approach.

"What we have to avoid though is sky rocketing of costs. It is important that we commit ourselves early, in order to stretch the development work over several years."

The ideas for 2008 have received a lot of support, although McLaren boss Ron Dennis spoke out at Monaco in warning that the moves could escalate costs and drive independent teams out of the sport.
