Berger Hopes to Gain from Traction Control

BMW motorsports director Gerhard Berger is hoping that the Williams team will capitalise on the re-introduction of traction control at the Spanish Grand Prix on April 29.

BMW motorsports director Gerhard Berger is hoping that the Williams team will capitalise on the re-introduction of traction control at the Spanish Grand Prix on April 29.

The traction control system and other electronic aids will be allowed again in the next race after they were banned at the end of the 1993 season.

"We are all going to be interested in seeing what the changes make for everyone," said Berger. "It is going to give different stresses to the car and the engine, and hopefully it will upset someone's reliability."

BMW-Williams, like most teams, have been working hard on the new system in testing, but Berger was cautious in his performance predictions for the future.

"We are working on traction control now and still working on it but I am confident it will be okay," he said.

"We want to make sure everyone is on the same conditions and we will know in two weeks," he added. "We are not happy with it for the drivers but at least we will know, we hope, everyone is racing in the same conditions."
