Barcelona, day 2: Trulli quick

Jarno Trulli showed that Renault could be a force to be reckoned with this season with an impressive performance on the second day of testing at Barcelona today (Tuesday). The Italian tried the R202 in qualifying spec for the first time in the afternoon and recorded a best lap of 1m17.761s, just a few tenths shy of the quickest time set at the track this winter by McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen

"I'm really happy with the amount of work we managed to get through today," he said. "Before I knew the potential of the car, but could never do lots of laps because of niggling problems. I'm so happy with the handling of the car and I'm just beginning to learn how to get the best from the tyres. There's more to come."

Enrique Bernoldi was an encouraging second fastest for Arrows, albeit two seconds slower than Trulli. The Brazilian worked on the set-up of the car, which suffered an hydraulics leak near the end of the test.

It was a frustrating day for Jordan, with both cars developing a mysterious problem that caused them to lose drive a lap or so into a run. This limited Giancarlo Fisichella to 38 laps, while Takuma Sato, who had planned to run a race distance, did just 23.

Mark Webber had an equally tough time in the Minardi, which was sidelined on its installation lap by an electrical fault. The Australian did not set a competitive time all day, although he did complete 13 out-and-in laps.
