Barcelona, day 2: Rubens tests F2002

Rubens Barrichello had his first run in the new Ferrari F2002 at Barcelona today (Wednesday) - and he has given the car a big thumbs up

The Brazilian completed 87 untroubled laps and was only second to McLaren tester Alexander Wurz who was driving a year-old car.

Barrichello said he was very happy with his first test. "There are so many things to learn," he said with plenty of enthusiasm. "I have to start with a clean sheet of paper."

The positive outcome of the test could influence Ferrari's choice of what car to take to next week's Barzilian Grand Prix. The team have used last year's F2001 in the first two races. World champion Michael Schumacher will take over from Barrichello tomorrow at Barcelona.

Ferrari test driver Luca Badoer set the third quickest time of the day in the new car, while Jordan, Williams, Jaguar, Sauber, British American Racing and Toyota also ran.

Like Ferrari, Jaguar are also using this test to evaluate their old and new cars. But Pedro de la Rosa only drove the troublesome new R3 today while last year's R2 remained in the garage. The team could switch back to using the R2 for the San Marino GP on the basis of what happens over the next two days in Spain.

Juan Pablo Montoya was only seventh fastest for Williams. The Colombian was carrying out set-up work for next month's Spanish GP at the circuit. This is the last F1 test at the track until then and Montoya will not test there again after today.

The bright and sunny day of testing was interrupted many times by red flags. But none of the spins which caused some of these proved serious.
