Barcelona, day 2 am: Ferrari on top

The Ferraris of Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello starred in testing at Barcelona this morning, eclipsing the times set by Williams at the Circuit de Catalunya yesterday

The world champion ended the morning session with the quickest time, although his best lap of 1m18.964s was still some way short of the pace shown by McLaren at the track last week. Rubens Barrichello was just a few hundredths behind his team-mate in second and held an even slenderer advantage over Nick Heidfeld in third - the Sauber C21 the quickest of the 2002 cars.

Antonio Pizzonia was the fastest of the four Williams drivers present. Ralf Schumacher was just behind the Brazilian in the FW24, although a mechanical problem caused him to stop on track and limited his running to nine laps. Marc Gene lost most of the session following an engine blow and Juan Pablo Montoya did only an installation lap and did not set a competitive time.

Jacques Villeneuve drove the new BAR, but the former champion was not happy with his seat. Jenson Button completed just one lap in the Renault and was another driver not to set a time.

Takuma Sato, 25 yesterday, put the new Jordan through its paces and he was joined in the team by German Formula Renault driver Marcel Lasee. The 19-year-old drove a 2001-spec EJ11 and completed 33 laps. His best time was half a second shy of Sato's.

Testing continues this afternoon.
