Barcelona, day 1: Raikkonen leads way

World championship protagonist Kimi Raikkonen set the quickest time of the day in Formula 1 testing at Barcelona for McLaren-Mercedes, lapping the Spanish GP venue in 1m17.118s

Raikkonen outpaced team-mate David Coulthard by a couple of hundredths as they prepared for the upcoming US Grand Prix. Test driver Alexander Wurz, who was fastest in the morning, was third fastest on 1m17.220s.

Toyota and Renault also took part in the test, with the latter's test driver Franck Montagny fourth fastest on 1m17.785s and da Matta managing 1m17.867s for the Japanese manufacturer.

"For the first of my two days in Barcelona this week, we completed a massive number of laps with no real problems," said da Matta. "As usual with testing, we are putting all of our efforts into preparing ourselves as well as possible for the upcoming races. I have never driven at either Indianapolis or Suzuka and they are the final races of the season, so our testing work this week will be very important."
