Barcelona day 1: Alonso quickest

Fernando Alonso set the fastest time on the first day of this week's Formula 1 test at Barcelona today (Monday), with a blisteringly quick lap almost three seconds faster than team-mate Jarno Trulli

Only two teams were in action today, with Allan McNish joining Renault's two race drivers and both Giancarlo Fisichella and Ralph Firman in action for Jordan.

Alonso and Trulli were concentrating on a tyre development programme, although only the Spaniard completed some short runs. Alonso was also running with a revised aerodynamic package, helping to explain the time difference between him and his Italian team-mate. McNish was slowest of the all the cars running today, although he was running a 2002-specification car.

Jordan ran two EJ13 cars for the first time, with Fisichella outpacing new team-mate Firman by 0.306s. The Briton was shaking down the second EJ13 built, and completed 68 laps despite two quick spins.

Action at the test should hot up tomorrow, with Toyota, Williams, BAR and Jaguar all scheduled to join the test. But the teams present in the next few days could face an unexpected problem - Barcelona was an unseasonably cold 4 degrees today, and snow is forecast for tomorrow.
