Barcelona confirm safety revisions

The plans to tighten up the penultimate corner have been talked about for some time, but the green light for the work has only just been given.

The revisions to the Europcar corner will dramatically slow it down, which in turn will make the pitlane entry and the final corner slower too.

The run-off areas at these final corners will also be covered in asphalt, to replace the gravel traps that have been in place until now.

An increased run-off area at the Wurth corner is also being constructed, and the paddock and pit facilities are also being upgraded.

Autosport.com revealed recently that the Grand Prix Drivers' Association (GPDA) is keen for safety improvements to be made at Barcelona, following a meeting to discuss their fears at Jerez testing.

GPDA chairman Ralf Schumacher said: "There are issues at Barcelona and in Valencia. We will address them, as everyone is aware of the situation. We want to feel safe enough to go to them.

"If the work does not happen, then we will not go. It is as simple as that."
