Barcelona 5: Pizzonia quickest
Williams beat Toyota in a quiet final day of testing at Barcelona today (Friday). Just three cars were present, with Antonio Pizzonia coming out ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya and Cristiano da Matta
Pizzonia completed a massive 114 laps, including a race simulation. The Williams only encountered a problem on the very last lap of the 'race'. Pizzonia is still reported to be a little uncomfortable in the car, but will be back in the cockpit when testing resumes at Jerez next week.
"I'm glad we didn't have big problems today," said Pizzonia, who has been confirmed as a Williams test driver for 2004. "We didn't do any setup work, because we had such a big reliability programme to finish. I feel good and back in the swing of things."
Montoya tried various suspension parts, which weren't all to his satisfaction. He spent a lot of time sitting in the pits as things were changed, but remained in a good mood. He was pleased that his best time came during his long run.
Da Matta also worked on suspension, without encountering major problems aside from the Toyota's general lack of speed. "The base of the car is good, but it doesn't have enough speed. We have to find the speed somewhere."
Toyota partner Olivier Panis came to greet the team today after being released from hospital following his shunt earlier in the week. The Frenchman was fit and in good spirits.
Antonio Pizzonia (Williams-BMW) 1m15.080s 114
Juan Pablo Montoya (Williams-BMW) 1m15.223s 42
Cristiano da Matta (Toyota) 1m16.052s 82
