Badoer's future in balance

Spaniard Marc Gene is highly likely to continue driving for Minardi in the year 2000, according to team boss Cesare Fiorio

But Luca Badoer's place in the team is hanging in the balance as the team negotiates over the possible buy-out by Spanish communications company Telefonica.

Neither driver has scored a point this year and their best result is eighth; Gene in Canada and Badoer in San Marino.

The struggling Italian team, who are very much the poor relations of the paddock, could become a revitalised force if the communications giant takes control and invests millions.

'Everything is hinging on that. There is a strong interest towards our team which we have achieved our ambition of becoming attractive to investors.

'No deal is concluded but talks are going on,' said Fiorio in Monza.

The arrival of Telefonica could also unlock the funds for Minardi to switch to Supertec engines for the new millenium.

'There is a strong like between the Telefonica and the Supertec deal,' commented Fiorio.

'It is early for us the make a decision about drivers although Marc Gene is more or less confirmed for next year.

'Luca {Badoer] was very unlucky to break his hand in Fiorano but he brings a lot of experience though his work as Ferrari test driver.

'We haven't discussed his position; the Minardi-Telefonica position has to be finalised.'

Badoer had previously said he has already been offered a contract to continue as Ferrari test driver and is considering his future.
