Badoer Outpaces Sauber Duo at Barcelona - Day One

The Ferrari and Sauber teams kicked off today their final test of the year at the Barcelona circuit, where both outfits will work until next Friday before the test ban that will last until January 7.

The Ferrari and Sauber teams kicked off today their final test of the year at the Barcelona circuit, where both outfits will work until next Friday before the test ban that will last until January 7.

Italian driver Luca Badoer was the quickest of the three men on track, who were welcomed by a light rain in the morning. The Ferrari tester lapped more than a whole second faster than German Heinz-Harald Frentzen in the first of the Saubers.

Badoer, who tomorrow will be joined by Brazilian Rubens Barrichello, was also the busiest man on track, completing 96 laps around the Spanish circuit at the wheel of the F2002.

German Frentzen and teammate Nick Heidfeld worked for the Sauber team as the Swiss squad continued their preparations ahead of the 2003 season with their Petronas-powered C21. Frentzen was the fastest of the two, lapping more than half a second faster than his compatriot.

Heidfeld, however, was hampered by a slight fever that made him uncomfortable in the car.

"The weather was not good and the track was wet until lunch time," said Sauber's head of engineering Jacky Eeckelaert. "We have therefore adapted our program to cater for this. This morning, Heinz-Harald Frentzen ran a wet tyre program for Bridgestone and concentrated on aerodynamic in the afternoon.

"Nick felt better in the afternoon and conducted a program of damper development."

Testing at Barcelona continues tomorrow.
