Badoer Fastest at Monza - Day One

Ferrari's test driver Luca Badoer went quickest on the first day of testing at the Monza circuit in Italy.

Badoer began the preparations for the upcoming Canadian and United States Grands Prix, concentrating on tyre testing and aerodynamic work at the wheel of the F2004. The Italian test driver completed a total of 86 laps with a best time of 1:21.587.

German Ralf Schumacher finished second quickest with the only Williams-BMW in action at the Italian track, while BAR's test driver Anthony Davidson wound up third with the Honda-powered car.

Toyota were the only team who worked with two drivers, with Olivier Panis and Ricardo Zonta sharing testing duties as the Japanese squad kicked off their preparations for the Canadian Grand Prix. Panis was the fastest of the two, while Zonta finished at the bottom of the times.

Sauber's Felipe Massa was fifth fastest as he began the evaluation of the Swiss squad's latest aerodynamic package.

"Our main focus will be on assessing new parts resulting from our wind tunnel work and particularly on different front and rear wings," said Sauber's race engineer Giampaolo Dall'Ara at the end of the day. "As the next two races, especially the Canadian Grand Prix, are also hard on brakes we will carry out some tests in this area too.

"Unfortunately it started to drizzle after the lunch break. Given that we decided not to do too many runs this afternoon and moved the programme to the next days. Particularly on Thursday and Friday we will also concentrate on Bridgestone tyre construction work in preparation for the forthcoming European races."
