Moscow Expects GP Deal to be Signed on Friday
Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone will arrive in Moscow on Thursday to sign a deal to stage a Grand Prix there in 2003, local organisers said on Wednesday.
Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone will arrive in Moscow on Thursday to sign a deal to stage a Grand Prix there in 2003, local organisers said on Wednesday.
"We expect Mr Ecclestone to arrive in Moscow on Thursday evening and on Friday he is supposed to sign a deal with the Moscow government to stage a Moscow Grand Prix in 2003," Maria Lekukh, a spokesperson for the local organisers, told Reuters.
On his first trip to the Russian capital last May, Ecclestone promised Moscow a Formula One Grand Prix as soon as a suitable circuit was built.
"It is the FIA Formula One World Championship and it's about time we had a round of this Championship in Russia and, in particular, in Moscow," Ecclestone, vice-president of the sport's governing body FIA, said at the time.
The Moscow circuit, projected to cost more than $100 million, is due to be built at Nagatino on a bend in the Moskva river a few kilometres south of the city centre.
Lekukh said construction of the circuit had yet to begin however: "The project is ready, but I don't think they will start construction until all the documents are signed."
